It's been a long time since I blogged but I think it's fine time to get back into it and this seemed to be a useful start. My job for the last few years has been in the electrical industry, specifically dealing with electrical distribution for Alberta in Canada, ns outage map.

A common question following a large storm event is about our restoration priorities. We restore power in a specific order starting with any emergency safety concerns. Then we restore power to the substations and main power lines that bring electricity from power plants to our towns and cities. After that, we focus on critical services identified by the Emergency Management Office such as hospitals, police, fire, water and communications. Next, we repair power lines that will restore power to the greatest number of customers in the least amount of time, including high density buildings or neighbourhoods. Once these repairs are made, crews restore power to smaller groups of customers and individuals.

Planned outages are sometimes necessary to conduct work that ensures our electrical system remains safe and reliable for our customers. These outages create safe work environments for our crews, while they are working on our power system to do emergency repairs, system upgrades, maintenance and other work on our electrical equipment. We do everything we can to minimize the number of customers impacted by a planned outage. We also aim to inform customers of a planned outage 24 to 48 hours in advance with an automated phone message. We plan outages so we can safely conduct work to ensure our electrical system remains safe and reliable for our customers. A lot of the work we do on the power system can be done without a planned outage, but in some cases the only way to complete the work safely for our crews is with the power turned off. Planned outages are typically scheduled in advance, so crews can work safely on our system. The work may include emergency repairs, system upgrades, maintenance and other work on our electrical equipment.

When a storm happens, our crews do everything they can to repair damage and get the lights back on for customers. We stand our crews down when the wind reaches over 80 km an hour. Safety is our top priority and sometimes that can mean waiting until the wind slows down so we can safely start our restoration work. When this happens, crews focus on assessing damage and restoring power from the ground when possible. Damage can be more severe than expected. The estimated restoration time on our outage map is based on a few different considerations—weather conditions, location of the outage, past outages in the area, and more. Once our crews arrive on site and assess the damage, they sometimes identify other factors that could impact the restoration time.
