In this new show, there is an increased focus on exploring locations across the globe and helping creatures above the sea, in contrast to the original show. Almost all previously introduced friends and family of the Octonauts have been recruited as Octo-Agents, sporting new watches that can signal an Octo-Alert, amongst other helpful features. The new series also introduces the concept of " Terra Gups ", which are Gups exclusively for land adventures. The series also drops the original show's format of having just Barnacles, Kwazii and Peso go out on missions.

Octonauts above and beyond

The Octonauts expand their exploration beyond the sea — and onto land! With new rides and new friends, they'll protect any habitats and animals at risk. The Octonauts shipwreck on a desert coast and meet water scientist monkey Paani, who leads them to thirsty animals in need of major hydration. Dashi and Peso round up a reindeer herd when lava causes floods in Iceland. Kwazii and grandad Calico Jack find a new island home for a band of beetles. Dashi whips through wild winds in Antarctica to rescue Calico Jack. Professor Inkling and Paani help a hibernating salamander avoid a harmful gas. Dashi, Tweak and Tunip search for hot springs after mudslides force a snake out of his home. The Octonauts help hungry pupfish find their algae snack. Dashi and sister Koshi take critters to higher ground before floods arrive. Professor Natquik and Paani use an underground river to guide a bird home. Min and Dashi protect a crew of sleeping caterpillars from predators. The Octonauts roll in with a new ride to save creatures from crumbling rocks.

In addition, to cover this global range of missions, more characters join the crew as main characters in the series. A second season debuted on 2 May on Netflix. These are the Octonauts that were in the original series, including the captain. They are known as Octo-Agents, friends of the Octonauts who are stationed all over the world. They are experts and adventurers that assist the Octonauts on their new land missions.
