Thanks to the onslaught of 'Reality TV' over the last decade, we seem to have lost empathy for those whose lot in life has driven them to submit to acts of desperation in hopes of finding a way forward. Kyle Joe Cole, "Peaky Blinders" is a down-on-his-luck local guy with a wife and young daughter. Life is hard and he's desperate to improve their way of life. However, he's such an honest and good person that our impression is that he's one of those who just gets continually kicked while down. When Joan Carrie Preston, "True Blood" , in her role as Public Relations Director for Boudreaux car dealership, announces a contest to win a new pickup truck, Kyle sees his chance to make things better for his family. A lottery is held to select twenty people who will compete for the vehicle in a test of endurance: they must keep one hand on the truck at all times, taking only short breaks with no chance for sleep. The expectation is that this could last hours, with sleep deprivation and psychological willpower certainly in play. It's a diverse group of twenty, and mind games are afoot, especially by one of the participants, Kevin Jesse C Boyd Since watching people stand around touching a truck lacks cinematic drama, director Gunther infuses some of Joan's less-than-stellar personal life, while also offering tidbits on some of the participants.

Stupid scripts, can turn out to be good movies, but did it work this time around? How far would you go?

By John DeFore. In the years before his death, Robert Altman intended to adapt the ensemble-ready story, but it never happened. Now comes One of These Days , in which Bastian Gunther, a German director who has worked for years in Texas, incorporates a more recent episode into the scenario, focusing on the strain endured by one contestant in particular. The real contest took place in Longview, Texas. Joan appears to use Hands On as a substitute for other kinds of human connection, putting up an enthusiastic front that wears some people out. The film is light on some details here — aside from the guy who listens to music and annoyingly slaps the truck in time with it, why is nobody fighting boredom with a smartphone? Is that against the rules? Five-minute restroom break every hour; 15 minutes every six hours; no sleeping, leaning or sitting down in between.

In March , as the pandemic became bad enough that businesses around the world started shutting down, the news was filled with human-interest stories about people stuck abroad: on cruise ships, in hotels, at airports, even at luxury resorts. One of those stories was about Khani Le and Matt Robertson, a newly dating couple who flew to Costa Rica for an impulsive romantic getaway that ended up stretching on for months. Because Matt liked to vlog about his adventures, he recorded nearly every stage of the process as he and Khani worried about the outside world, settled into new routines and tried to get to know each other. Matt and Khani had to put on a show for about 80 days. The film also functions as an unusual record of a very strange time.

Metascore Mixed or Average. I like Carrie Preston but she could still have plenty of screen time by diving more into the contest. And what does it do with anyone mentally? Was this review helpful? But the movie is also relentlessly sour, reducing nearly everyone in it except Joan to a few immediately observable and mostly unflattering traits. Adam Cope Lance. The bad: however stupid and potentially funny this story sounded at the beginning I soon realised that this movie was a DUD. Literally, if you take the last 16, 17 minutes of the movie and slap it onto the beginning, this largely becomes an entertaining, cohesive film. Would I recommend this film?
