Electron Configuration Notation: -shows the arrangment of electrons around the nucleus of an atom. How to Write the Electron Configuration for Sulfur S In order to write the Sulfur electron configuration we first need to know the number of electrons for the S atom there are 16 electrons. When we write the configuration we'll put all 16 electrons in orbitals around the nucleus of the Sulfur atom. In writing the electron configuration for Sulfur the first two electrons will go in the 1s orbital. Since 1s can only hold two electrons the next 2 electrons for sulfur go in the 2s orbital. The next six electrons will go in the 2p orbital.

We've been studying quantum mechanics. In the quantum mechanical model , electrons reside in orbitals. We learned that orbitals are described by quantum numbers. We've also learned how to write electron configurations for neutral atoms and ions. But, an electron configuration does not give us the full picture. Electron configurations do not show orbital energies or electron pairing. That's the first and fourth quantum numbers.
Note: The review of general chemistry in sections 1. The electron configuration of an atom is the representation of the arrangement of electrons distributed among the orbital shells and subshells. Commonly, the electron configuration is used to describe the orbitals of an atom in its ground state, but it can also be used to represent an atom that has ionized into a cation or anion by compensating with the loss of or gain of electrons in their subsequent orbitals. Many of the physical and chemical properties of elements can be correlated to their unique electron configurations. The valence electrons, electrons in the outermost shell, are the determining factor for the unique chemistry of the element. Before assigning the electrons of an atom into orbitals, one must become familiar with the basic concepts of electron configurations.
