One of the premier music festivals original lollapalooza the country, Lollapalooza is three days of non-stop music, vibes and good times.

The Chicago mainstay — which is taking place from Aug. Unbeknownst to Farrell at the time, the festival would be an immense success leading to the event becoming a yearly occurrence. Despite being cancelled several times due to financial difficulties, the festival found new life in and eventually became a four-day event in Pearl Jam , Ice Cube and Soundgarden also performed. Lolla kept pushing boundaries with its talent curation in by booking the likes of Primus , Alice In Chains , Fishbone , Dinosaur Jr. Nirvana were scheduled to headline Lollapalooza in , but ultimately withdrew. The late Coolio , Moby and Superchunk appeared on the side stage.

For some time, I've wanted to write about my experiences, both as a fan and a writer, from various Lollapalooza tours. Thanks, Michele!!! By the time the first Lollapalooza had arrived at Waterloo Village in Stanhope, NJ, I was an year-old high school graduate getting ready for my first semester of college. What a fitting summer sendoff into "adulthood". Some people would refer to Lollapalooza as the "Gen X Woodstock" but that wasn't the case at all. Perhaps what the festival had evolved into many years later, where it's stationary like it was in when I went as a writer is more reminiscent of Woodstock , but certainly not during the early days. We take it for granted now, 32 years after the festival's initial assault on youth culture, but back in , people had trouble pronouncing Lollapalooza [ lol- uh -p uh - loo -z uh ], let alone understanding what it was.

I had been to enough shows prior to this one where moshing or crowd-surfing was the order of the day, original lollapalooza, but this was just different.

Over more than 30 years, the festival has charted trends in both the mainstream and counterculture, and become an emblem for the globalisation of culture. When Lollapalooza began in , it was supposed to signify an ending. Over 30 years later, with some ups and downs along the way, the event has put down roots in Chicago but also expanded, with international outposts of the festival blossoming all over the world. Its first edition all those years ago was much smaller than the festival is now, with only seven acts on the bill versus over today, but it represented the artists — like Siouxsie And The Banshees , Nine Inch Nails and Body Count — who existed outside of the status quo. As the then-two-day event continued through the mid-nineties, it coincided with alternative rock achieving mainstream status, pushed to the front by a rising wave of grunge artists led by Nirvana.

It originally started as a touring event in , but several years later, Chicago became its permanent location. Music genres include alternative rock , heavy metal , punk rock , hip hop , and electronic dance music. Lollapalooza has also featured visual arts , nonprofit organizations , and political organizations. The festival hosts an estimated , people each July and sells out annually. Lollapalooza was conceived and created in as a farewell tour by Perry Farrell , singer of the group Jane's Addiction. The first Lollapalooza tour had a diverse collection of bands and was a commercial success.
