I replaced the EGR with a used unit and that one went away. I inspected the downstream O2 sensor located on the cat and saw that it had broken wire.

One trip fault. The replacement cat was not OEM, but it was a direct fit replacement.

This is one of the most frequent OBD2 trouble codes. Read the full article below to know what it means, how to fix it, and what other codes may show related to it. It is a general term that usually implies that the heating element circuit of the HO2S has a problem. In modern vehicle engines, oxygen sensors with a heating element are widespread. A heating element is crucial to this sensor. Whilst an oxygen sensor was a single wire sensor in pre-OBDII cars; now a four wires sensor is more common. Two wires dedicated to the oxygen sensor and two dedicated to the heating element. The oxygen sensor warmer simply reduces the time required for a complete loop. The PCM checks the heater on time. The PCM checks the heater circuits continually for aberrant voltages or even for abnormal amperages in some instances.

We recommend Torque Pro. Regardless of the number of oxygen sensors present in a vehicle, each sensor is provided with a dedicated circuit to control the heating of the sensor element. Heating the element electrically brings the sensors into operation much sooner than would have been the case if the sensors were heated by the exhaust stream; by bringing the sensors into operation sooner, emissions are reduced significantly. Note that the electrical resistance may differ on some applications- consult the manual on the exact values for the application being worked on. During normal closed loop engine operation, the signal voltage from the 2 oxygen sensor s will vary constantly, and in cases where the PCM detects no changes in the sensor signal voltage s for a period of about 8 continuous seconds, code P can be set and the CHECK ENGINE light triggered. In practical terms, this means that sensor 1 measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream as a function of the combustion process before it enters the catalytic converter, while sensor 2 measures how well the converter s copes with cleaning up the exhaust stream. Note that in the case of short circuits that leak power into a control circuit, there is likely to be other, seemingly unrelated trouble codes present along with the code s being investigated.

The time now is AM. Sign up. I replaced the EGR with a used unit and that one went away. Explore Our Forums. Please consider creating a new thread. Email this Page. I know this is the heater circuit high for the second O2 sensor the one in the cat. The heater is used to quickly get the sensor up to operating temperature during engine warm up. The following errors occurred with your submission. Cheers, Andrew. Thread Tools.
With that being said, the code refers to a fault or problem in the heating control circuits of the O2 sensor HO2S. This code is closely related to P which is an error caused by a low circuit. On the other hand, P is a circuit high input code.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Hello all, NTK O2 sensor has 4. Email this Page. All times are GMT It was a direct plug in, I will check the plug itself. Sign up. I replaced the EGR with a used unit and that one went away. So I replaced the sensor with a new NTK unit and cleared the codes. Means the heater circuit for the downstream O2 sensor has a problem. Recommended Communities. Log in. The CEL is gone! After I had performed the diagnosing described above, I cleared the codes for the 4th time that day and the P came back basically immediately.
