The District began by serving 26 students from kindergarten through 8th grade in its first facility set up in two rooms above a drug store in Malaga Cove Plaza. The school district continued to grow and, between and , enrollment went from 2, to 13, students. Attempts to form a unified school district on the Peninsula, which would provide an educational program for all K students to attend school on the Peninsula failed to pass in , , and Finally, in October of , voters elected to form a unified school district. In September Palos Verdes High School , the first public high school on the Peninsula, opened with an enrollment of 2, students. By enrollment in the District reached a high of 17, students resulting in serious overcrowding. Various measures were used to address the issue including redrawing attendance boundaries. The District also studied the viability of a year-round schedule with double sessions, extended-day sessions, reduction of high school graduation requirements and the purchase of portable classrooms. Prior to , most District income came from local property taxes which were based on assessed property value. In however, student enrollment became the most important factor in determining District income. While the District had a high enrollment in , the next year enrollment started to drop thus reducing the District's funding. Due to budget shortfalls, the District cut student programs and started to lay off its teachers in Local efforts to increase revenue limits per student were defeated.

Summer Intermediate School 6th grade — 8th grade — Students entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall can enroll in classes at Ridgecrest Intermediate School and Palos Verdes Intermediate School. Students may choose to attend either intermediate school; they do not need to attend the school that they will be attending in the fall. When registering for Summer Intermediate School, students will select their top four choices from the list of course offerings, along with four alternate choices. Individual class schedules will be created based on overall registration input. Please see class choices below. Summer Intermediate School reserves the right to reassign teachers and to add teachers when necessary. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled, and students placed in alternate choices.
