The Actik Core is easier to use and more compact than that but it uses a similar removable micro USB rechargeable battery which can be replaced with 3 x AAA batteries for when you will be off grid — think multi day trek in remote areas or multi day mountaineering activities. Having 3 x AAA Lithium batteries in the top of your pack will be lighter than packing a second head torch. If you wish you can purchase an extra Core unit and have that fully charged and ready to deploy. So, as you can see, the hybrid system is super versatile for every budget. The Actik Core has been around for a long time. It has the same hinge design as its lower-priced siblings the Petzl Tikkina , and unfortunately I had the same problems with this as i had with that. I must again stress that I tested a pre-production sample, and Petzl has promised these issues will be fixed in production units; but I still think the design is less user-friendly than the old one. Battery life is fine but unspectacular, especially in high brightness, which drains the battery very quickly. The Actik Core is a three-season torch that can do lightweight duty in winter thanks to a good boost mode.

The two other settings are Standard, which gives you lumens for seven hours, and Max Burn Time which gives you 7 lumens for hours. You get two beam patterns with the Actik — Flood or Mixed, with the latter being a combination of spot and flood patterns. You also get a red light that can be used on continuous or strobe modes — useful in an emergency situation, or to preserve night vision — plus you get a Lock function and a battery level indicator.
