The inspiration for this puzzle came from looking in the mirror. I have a gap wide enough to stick a screwdriver through. Initially, I laid this out as a Sunday 21x, wanting to have all the gaps exactly in the middle of the puzzle. That's a … gap in one's teeth? Very easy for me except for SW. Fun twist on the old "words hidden within theme phrases" theme type. The threes didn't bother me except maybe YEH 6D which looks strange since it is more commonly "yeah. But I did enjoy getting to wear a sulu, which is like a men's skirt that the Fijians wear. Apparently so. Ultimately, I think both errors are more on me than on the puzzle — SHIEST is apparently a variant spelling — but that didn't stop me from coming away frustrated. Don't they? Would anyone say that a manequin is a relative of a human simply because one looks vaguely like the other? Found bugs or have suggestions? I like a good imaginative theme, and these were quite nice. It was last seen in The New York Times quick crossword. Surely you all were aware of that and don't call you Shirley! Still charming. I'm not that into them, but if I were a puzzle constructor, I do believe that being that close would drive me crazy. Cute clue but not surprised at the editor. A tough way to start off the puzzle, but a satisfying guess to finish it off. Had to understand, too, if that puts constraints on the constructor, leading to some bad fill. See, this is why I only solve puzzles; constructing them is far beyond the powers of my little mind. It's the Kuiper Belt object whose discovery killed poor old Pluto. Freshness Factor is a calculation that compares the number of times words in this puzzle have appeared in other Modern Era puzzles. I'm pretty sure I've read every single one of Jeff's write-ups here, along with another couple thousand or so of Rex's blog reviews and hundreds of Wordplay, Cruciverb, Fiend, etc. Hugely admire those who finished sans googling.
