The southern Nicaraguan coast is a series of bays or coves, ringed with jagged and dramatic rock formations. This makes for dozens of different beaches within a short distance from San Juan del Sur. Each beach is unique - with it's own geography, ocean currents, and patrons. Part of the fun of staying in town is the easy access to explore all these different San Juan del Sur beaches, whether by shuttle, rental car, or taxi. We explored 8 of the San Juan del Sur beaches during our stay, and each one was super different from the last. Some we loved more than others, but each was an interesting stop. It was an absolutely gorgeous beach.

Where is Playa Marsella? Why right next to Playa Maderas! It is really in the same neighborhood. Playa Marsella is less well known than her sister bay of Playa Maderas and is the quieter beach. With a long, white sandy beach stretching from one end of the bay to the other, Marsella is strikingly beautiful. And the large rock formation in her bay is her well known vista. Playa Marsella is located just north of San Juan del Sur. It is only about 10 kilometers from town though a minute drive depending on road conditions as the Chocolata Road aka, the Coast Highway Road is a dirt road in the dry season and a muddy road in the rainy season. You may want to stop for a round of Frisbee Disk Golf or a walk along the river on their nature trail to see some howler monkeys and parrots. At the last empalme, fork in the road , Playa Marsella is the road on the left while Playa Maderas is the road on the right. The river empties into the estuary at Playa Marsella and there are always lots of birds along the river. If you want to stay someplace quiet and tranquil outside of town there are a few Accommodations in the Playa Marsella neighborhood. And, there is a little market in the neighborhood, Angelita's which is located on the Chocolata Road.

Playa Marsella is probably the best place to visit by the whole family. A dirt road leads to the beach through the Marsella Valley, which is best overcomed by cross-country vehicle during the rainy season. You could not get to the fishermen's bay by public transport. From San Juan, from the municipal market, people take a taxi or go by car, following the road signs. In winter, travel can be very difficult due to rains. The best time to visit Nicaragua regarding the weather is the months from October to January, when the rains have already ended and the dry season has not yet arrived. However, keep in mind that many Americans come to Nicaragua for Christmas and New Year, which affects the price level.

There is some surfing at Playa Hermosa. There is a restaurant, bar, and countless palapas and seating areas up and down the beach. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid walking alone on secluded beaches at night, and follow any specific guidelines provided by your accommodation or local authorities.
