Hendrik Lindepuu translated a collection of poems by Świrszczyńska into Estonian and published it as a separate book: Anna Świrszczyńska. You will not tame this sea either by humility or rapture.
Anna Świrszczyńska also known as Anna Swir — was a Polish poet whose works deal with themes including her experiences during World War II , motherhood, the female body, and sensuality. Świrszczyńska was born in Warsaw and grew up in poverty as the daughter of an artist. She wrote for underground publications and once waited 60 minutes to be executed. Czesław Miłosz writes of knowing her during this time and has translated a volume of her work. In she published Building the Barricade , a volume which describes the suffering she witnessed and experienced during that time. She also writes frankly about the female body in various stages of life. Daughters have inspired many poets over the centuries, invoking not only feelings of love, protection, pride, and awe, but also anxiety, disappointment, anger, and loss. Thus poems about daughters range from adorations of the angelic child to laments about the indifferent, if not indignant, grown woman. I gaze out over the fields of Tadaka and see the cranes that cry there without interval, without pause: such is my longing for you. It is only later that he realizes his mistake and recognizes his love for Cordelia:. Upon such sacrifices, my Cordelia, The gods themselves throw incense.

We especially recommend the Yeats poem below, written for his own daughter. Bradstreet was the first published poet of America, with her The Tenth Muse Recently Sprung up in America appearing in , and early colonial life was hard, and often short. Bradstreet lived in Massachusetts with her husband, children, and other early English settlers in the New World. In this poem, Bradstreet thanks God for delivering her daughter Hannah from a fever. Once more the storm is howling, and half hid Under this cradle-hood and coverlid My child sleeps on. In the poem, Yeats watches his sleeping daughter and thinks of all the things he wishes for her: beauty but not too much beauty , and a personality that is free from hatred. Eliot is a major figure in twentieth-century literature, and his work is often obscure and makes demands of the reader, but this is one of his most nakedly emotive poems, and a fine lament for a lost daughter. Pericles laments his lost daughter — or rather, the daughter he thought he had lost, but with whom he is now reconciled. For more classic poetry, we also recommend The Oxford Book of English Verse — perhaps the best poetry anthology on the market we offer our pick of the best poetry anthologies here, and list the best books for the poetry student here.
