Like any form of media, anime has many popular character tropes and trends that have come up over the years. One fan-favorite archetype is the shrine maiden, also known as a Miko. These characters are tasked with maintaining a Shinto shrine and acting as a guide or caretaker for guests who visit. Shrine maidens come in a variety of personalities, but most are stern, responsible, and take their jobs very seriously. With their beauty, grace, and strong presence , they're often the fan favorites of a series. Whether they're the protagonist or take on a supporting role, shrine maidens are beloved by fans and almost always steal the show. Saya Kisaragi is the beautiful and deadly protagonist of Blood-C. However, by night, Saya becomes a fierce killer, slaying fearsome creatures known as Elder Bairns. Saya's double life is all for the sake of protecting humanity from these bloodsucking monsters.

Shrine maidens, or Miko, are used as a popular trope across a wide variety of anime genres. Sometimes Miko find themselves in that role after a series of turbulent events, like Nanami Momozono in Kamisama Kiss , or they are born into it like Mitzuha Miyamizu in Your Name. In real life, Miko are priestesses that maintain Shinto shrines, performing the well-known Kagura Dance as well as other spiritual and non-spiritual tasks. They often dress in red Hakama and white Haori, and are portrayed as having mystical powers like the sight, or other psychic abilities. This trope is comparable to nun-characters in Western media. Rei Hino, also known as Sailor Mars, is one of the most iconic shrine maidens in anime history. She is portrayed as straight-laced and wary of men, which is quite traditional to the Miko trope.
