Demolition began this week and the project security fencing is up as crews are tearing down , square feet of building that used to house a Scotty's, Food Lion and clothing outlet store in the block of Atlantic Boulevard. The complex, which has been a long strip of abandoned buildings for years, now is being ripped apart, with the buildings' interiors exposed. Construction is expected to take about a year after demolition is complete. After the new store is open, Publix will close its current store at Atlantic Blvd. The Neptune Beach site was once considered for a Wal-Mart Supercenter, but that was nixed after a protracted legal battle and public backlash. Publix officials moved quickly on signing a lease to be the anchor tenant when the plans for the Seminole Shoppes were announced in the spring to redevelop the site.
