The Archers is a British radio soap opera currently broadcast on BBC Radio 4 , the corporation's main spoken-word channel. Broadcast since , it was famously billed as "an everyday story of country folk" and is now promoted as "a contemporary drama in a rural setting". Five pilot episodes were aired in , and the first episode was broadcast nationally on New Year's Day A significant show in British popular culture , and with over five million listeners, it is Radio 4's most listened-to non-news programme, [8] [9] [10] and with over one million listeners via the internet, the programme holds the record for BBC Radio online listening figures. The Archers is set in the fictional village of Ambridge in the fictional county of Borsetshire , in England. Borsetshire is situated between what are, in reality, the contiguous counties of Worcestershire and Warwickshire , south of Birmingham in The Midlands of England.

As well as broadcasting episode number 19, of the world's longest-running serial drama, stars from it will appear on the station's other programmes. This will include inserts into Woman's Hour, Farming Today, and a quiz. The Archers, set in the fictional village of Ambridge, began in with the original purpose of educating farmers on modern agricultural methods. As I look back on this incredible legacy, I am looking forward to the next 70 years of The Archers.
