Like, a year ago late first seeing the excellent anime and then read the manga from there on through. I came to learn and love the characters, and started to invest in the series and then I saw how terrible a coach Komogawa is and sadly, how ultimately terrible Ippo had become as a protagonist. You can argue all day about his training, hard work and dedication making him a good protagonist but he failed in the end with a series by design meant for him to succeed through said, training, hard work and dedication.

The story in Hajime no Ippo is about the eponymous title character Ippo Makunouchi. A very shy, always helpful and friendly high school student. However, he is also very naive and so it happens that he all too often becomes the victim of bullying a few of his classmates. One day they lurk under a bridge to make him even harder than usual. But by chance they are discovered by a passing jogger, who makes the attackers harmless without further ado.
