NASA's Cassini spacecraft has been snapping amazing photos of Saturn and its moons from to See some of Cassini's latest spectacular photos of the Saturn system here.

September 15, was the last day in the history of the Cassini mission. On that day, the spacecraft entered the atmosphere of Saturn and turned into a meteor. Cassini is, without exaggeration, an outstanding mission. Over the years, the device has made many discoveries and collected a huge array of data about the sixth planet from the Sun. And it also transmitted to Earth a huge number of amazing photos of Saturn and its moons. On the way to its goal, Cassini visited Jupiter. The device photographed the largest planet of the Solar system, as well as some of its moons.

Cassini arrived at Saturn in , after a seven-year voyage. It was the first spacecraft to orbit the ringed planet. Like Earth, Saturn has a tilted axis. Each season on Saturn lasts about seven Earth years. Cassini detected lightning deep within the planet. As it descended, the probe recorded rivers and deltas carved by methane rain. Cassini discovered geysers near the south pole of Enceladus, where plumes of water shoot into space and fall back as bright snow. Cassini flew through the plumes many times. Could alien microbes be living inside Enceladus? It will take a future mission, and another spacecraft, to find the answer.

By Fiona Jackson For Mailonline. An astrophotographer has taken his clearest ever picture of Saturn while it made its closest approach to Earth this year. Our planet moved almost directly between Saturn and the sun on Sunday, in an annual celestial event known as 'opposition'. This is the moment when the gas giant is closest to us and is in its full phase, so can make for a great view even with the naked eye. Andrew McCarthy dodged the monsoon weather of Arizona in search of clearer skies to catch a glimpse of the ringed planet above Los Angeles , US, on Sunday. From the roof of a multi-storey car park, he used two cameras to take more than , images of Saturn, before layering them together to create the spectacular shot.

Saturn is so beautiful that astronomers cannot resist using the Hubble Space Telescope to take yearly snapshots of the ringed world when it is at its closest distance to Earth. These images, however, are more than just beauty shots. They reveal a planet with a turbulent, dynamic atmosphere. Smaller storms pop into view like popcorn kernels popping in a microwave oven before disappearing just as quickly. The image reveals that the ring system is tilted toward Earth, giving viewers a magnificent look at the bright, icy structure. Hubble resolves numerous ringlets and the fainter inner rings. This image reveals an unprecedented clarity only seen previously in snapshots taken by NASA spacecraft visiting the distant planet. Astronomers will continue their yearly monitoring of the planet to track shifting weather patterns and identify other changes. Coastal Resilience Projects.

Different shadings of blue indicate variations in the cloud particles, in size or chemical composition. The cloud particles are believed to be ammonia ice crystals. Most of the northern hemisphere that is visible above the rings is relatively clear.
