It was likely congestive heart failure, based on his symptoms and test results, according to another vet at a different animal hospital. Shah noted during the wellness visit that my dog was "bony" but didn't ask any follow-up questions regarding changes in behavior or habits when I noted that he rejected all food for several days and had developed a persistent cough. He didn't ask follow-up questions or even show any concern about this.
