Nikon D Until I sat down to actually write this review, it hadn't struck me how confusing the market placement of the Nikon D is. It's priced the same as the still-available D, which is in many ways a better camera. And with the exception of video, which many users don't care about anyway, it's very similar to the much cheaper D So while the D isn't a bad camera, and for the most part holds its own against competitors from other manufacturers, it still pales in comparison with its own line mates. The D has a very good noise profile; it matches and perhaps bests the current leader in the budget dSLR category, the Pentax K-x. The camera delivers excellent color reproduction in its default SD mode as well--a nice change from some overly saturation-pushing competitors like Pentax and Sony--and its metering and exposure system work reliably and well. Sharpness is, of course, lens dependent, but I was pretty happy with the various models I tested; generally, shots looked sharp but not oversharpened. In addition to the always reliable mm VR kit lens, I shot with the new pro-level mm f3.
ISO 3, files print very well at 13x19 inches, though shadows and dark objects start to lose some detail as contrast increases. ISO 1, images are very nice at 16x24 as well, though more of the review nikon d3100 look" appears around the edges and in the shadows.

The Nikon D is an entry-level digital SLR camera boasting a newly designed megapixel DX format sensor, a quick-access Live View mode, one-touch Full HD video recording with autofocus, plus an interactive Guide mode, a sensor dust buster and an point autofocus module. Like last year's D, the new Nikon D is a rather small DSLR camera, although it does come with a fairly chunky right-hand grip that makes it better suited to hand-held shooting than some of its competitors. Still, expect having to find a place for your little finger under the camera if you have larger-than-average hands. The body itself is mainly plastic, but while the camera certainly doesn't feel as robust as some of the company's higher specified models, it still exudes a degree of quality you might not expect at this price point. This is helped by the surprisingly classy rubber coating on the grip, which also appears on the thumb rest in the back of the camera. The Nikon D's body is a new design, 30 grams lighter than that of its predecessor, but the designers have gone to great lengths to make sure most controls are in the same places as before. The most notable changes to the outside of the camera include the omission of the infrared remote sensor that used to be in the grip of the D the Nikon D accepts a wired remote release cable only , the appearance of a built-in monaural microphone on the front plate and an all-new drive-mode lever at the top which we love because it makes setting and checking the current drive mode very easy and straightforward , plus a spring-loaded lever in the back that takes you to Live View mode at the flick of a thumb.
