It is the oldest surviving picture theatre in the town but not the first to operate see Richmond Picture Theatre. Walsh was already showing films in Richmond prior to building this new venture but the location of his previous cinema is unknown. The whole of the work, including all furnishings is being supervsed by Messrs. Mr Walsh has been fortunate in securing the services of Mr Jack Waters as manager of the new theatre. Mr Waters has had considerable previous experience in the picture show industry, and we feel sure that under his capable and competent guidance the venture will prove a success. The land on which the theatre was constructed was part of a large block granted to John Bowman and the historic home next door known as Toxana was constructed for William and Elizabeth Bowman in about When the property was subdivided Toxana Street was created in November

Late on a rainy night, the lights of the Richmond Regent cinema reflect on the wet road in front of it like moonlight on water. The lights are on in the lobby and in the upper-storey windows, but the building has a dramatic, shadowy presence, befitting the drama that happens on the screens within. The Regent dates from the picture-palace days of the s, when the grand facades and elegant interiors of art deco theatres offered transformation: a new atmosphere, one elegant and magical, elevated above ordinary life. The Regent opened in , a handful of years after its architects had designed another landmark theatre, the Roxy in Parramatta. It is not difficult to imagine the Regent at this time. Apart from its conversion to a twin cinema in the s, it has changed comparatively little. There are posters for the new releases affixed to the doors, and the potted palms that were once by the columns in the lobby have been replaced by a hand sanitiser dispenser and a check-in table, but the same feeling comes over me when I step inside. The Regent is the kind of cinema I visited as a child, with the same textures of velvet and carpet, and the hand-painted signs, and the sense that I had already begun to enter another, fantasy world just by stepping through the door. Perhaps the Regent has retained its identity so strongly because it has remained independent, and only ever had three owners. The first two, coincidentally, for they were not related, were both called Michael Walsh. Now in his 80s, he will retire in January, and the cinema will be taken over by new owners.

I was 14 and my first shift was on a Friday night - the busiest night of the week. The job saw me through the remainder of high school and part of the way through uni, so by the end I knew the place like the back of my hand. I knew the peculiarities of the candy bar registers, the quirks of the post-mix drink fountains, and the exact height and angle at which to place my hands in order to obtain continual flow from the sensor hand-drier in the downstairs female bathroom. I also worked out which floorboards creaked around the place and which doors squeaked, allowing me to enter and exit the cinemas mid-film in relative silence, so as not to disturb the patrons during the quiet scenes. From up in the projection rooms - above the constant whirring coming from the film equipment - certain bumps and crashes would be heard, indicating the projectionist was splicing together reels or breaking-down and packaging-up an older film to be sent back to the distributor.
