Riverdance is a theatrical show that consists mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. Shortly afterwards, husband and wife production team John McColgan and Moya Doherty expanded it into a stage show, which opened in Dublin on 9 February As of , the show continues to tour the world. Riverdance is rooted in a three-part suite of baroque-influenced traditional music called Timedance. Timedance was composed, recorded and performed for the Eurovision Song Contest , which was hosted by Ireland. The piece was performed, with accompanying dancers from Dublin City Ballet, [2] during the interval of the contest, and later released as a Planxty single. Whelan had also produced EastWind , a album by Planxty member Andy Irvine with Davy Spillane , which fused Irish and Balkan folk music and influenced the genesis of " Riverdance ". Riverdance was first performed during the seven-minute interval of the Eurovision Song Contest at the Point Theatre in Dublin on 30 April The performance was transmitted to an estimated million viewers worldwide [5] [6] and earned a standing ovation. But there's something extra special about seeing Riverdance where it all began. For the 16th summer in a row, Riverdance has returned to the stage of Dublin's Gaiety Theatre. Not only is Riverdance continuing to amaze audiences, but the cast and crew are also giving back. For the past three summers, hundreds of dancers from across Ireland have joined the cast for a hour Riverdanceathon in front of the Gaiety Theatre, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis, Alzheimer's and Motor Neuron Disease charities.
