Based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird , it is a re-imagined series that has the Turtles go on new adventures as they seek to unlock the mystical secrets of New York City and their own powers to save the world from evil. It was announced by Nickelodeon on March 2, , and was initially scheduled to run for at least 26 episodes. Suriano and Ward were attached as showrunners and executive producers. On July 27, , it was renewed the series for a second season consisting of 26 episodes. Partway into the production of this season, however, it was shortened in length to 13 episodes. The series follows four mutant turtle brothers named Leonardo , Raphael , Donatello , and Michelangelo as they go on new adventures where they end up "tapping into mystic ninja powers they never knew existed", while learning to work together as a team and navigate the perils of the modern age and hidden realms in order to fulfill their destiny to become a team of true heroes. Since the series release in , its developed a cult following dedicated to reviving the show which was cancelled back in Donatello , or Donnie , is a spiny softshell turtle who was mutated to become part human from mutant alchemist Baron Draxum , before being taken in with three other turtles from a man named Hamato Yoshi. He's the most tech savvy out of his three brothers and often looks down upon them for not sharing his same level of intellect. The show began as a Nickelodeon television series in and it not only gave the turtles Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael more unique character designs, but special mystic powers. However, low toy sales paired with poor marketing caused Nickelodeon to cancel season 3 and cut season 2 in half. While the turtles still have many minor villains to deal with, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie also set up several major threats. The most prominent of these was the evil villain Krang , a race of squid-like aliens. Once free, the Krang immediately began their plan to conquer Earth by mutating and enslaving the human race. Although the turtles defeated them, the film hinted that their victory might not be permanent as Krang One and Three were both trapped in the prison dimension again, not dead. Additionally, Krang Two was still on Earth, captured by a secret government organization called the Earth Protection Force. When Krang Two was captured by the Earth Protection Force, a government agent in a trench coat instructed bystanders not to take pictures.
