Saw is a horror media franchise created by Australian film makers James Wan and Leigh Whannell , which began with the eponymous film and quickly became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. The franchise has expanded into various films and other media, including a television series, video games, comic books, music, theme park attractions, and merchandising including toys, masks, and clothing. Saw is the fifth highest-grossing horror film franchise. The series revolves around the fictional serial killer John "Jigsaw" Kramer and his apprentices. Kramer was introduced briefly in Saw and developed in more detail in the subsequent films.

You don't need to play games to watch the Saw movies in order online. Especially when many of them are under the same streaming roof, and others are headed to one of the best streaming services. The Saw movies are horror movies of a particularly twisted and popular bent, and they began with those killed by Jigsaw. The puzzlingly named miscreant, and those who bore his influence in the many Saw films, sets traps that give the victim a chance of survival, often based around their own dark secrets and a terrible choice that would leave them permanently disfigured or damaged in one way or another. Since there's a chance that some are coming to these movies relatively uninformed, we're going to keep this explainer of how to watch the Saw movies nearly entirely spoiler-free. That is until we explain a little bit about what's going on with Saw X at the bottom of this story. That said, you won't need Starz for long. So, the big complex web of the Saw movies, there are some caveats to know. First and foremost, the Saw movies are filled with flashbacks. Heck, half of Jigsaw is a flashback. Also, as noted above, Saw X is not the tenth chronological film in the Saw movies. So you only really need to have seen the original Saw to know what's going on. Arguably, though, the rest of the films including the prequel half of Jigsaw will leave you more informed. The good thing to note is that the release order is very similar to the chronological order, so we recommend watching it in the manner in which they were released.

Directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, Jigsaw is split into two stories, one set in present time years after John Kramer's death where a copycat killer is on the loose leaving victims around the city with puzzle-sized chunks of flesh missing from them, and the other half set decades before back when Kramer was still alive.

This time around, his gruesome games were held internationally, in Mexico, to be specific. The first was released in , and they all share an inter-connected, convoluted canon spanning most of the movies—though there is one in particular that is particularly disconnected. It is also worth noting that many of the Saw films secretly hold plenty of timeline shenanigans. So, the events depicted in the release order are not always in the exact order they played out in-universe. However, little did they know that a new deadly game had already been started. Saw III sees Dr. Lynn Denlon, played by Bahar Soomekh, tasked with keeping John Kramer, the Jigsaw killer, alive long enough for one of his brutal games to run its course. To save his daughter, Jeff will need to gradually make his way through a handful of traps that see those involved with the death of his son fatally punished—unless he can save their lives. While both can briefly be seen in Saw III , neither was afforded any notable screen time. The movie also explores how Hoffman came to be associated with John Kramer in the first place.

Although it has not been confirmed, many fans believe that the traps we see in Jigsaw were the first that John ever set up. Although the bigger portion of this film is supposed to be set before any of the other Saw movies took place, nothing that happens is key to the rest of the franchise and can be watched at any point in the saga. The movie that started the catalyst that is Saw is of course the original movie directed by horror legend James Wan, known for other iconic screen screams such as The Conjuring and Insidious.
