Walking into a VS store back then was indeed akin to walking into what I imagined an Edwardian boudoir looked like; small tables covered with chintz tablecloths where you could sit and sip a cup of tea, soft classical music that soothed and encouraged shopping, a lovely fragrance, soft-voiced, helpful clerks -- all of which combined to remind you that this was a very special shopping experience.
