Serena is a young girl whose appearance changes based on trainer customization. The player can choose between 3 different preset default appearances, chooseing between Serena's hair, eye and skin color. These defaults otherwise are identical. In most media and her stock art, Serena uses the default middle option, having gray eyes and long honey-blonde hair.

The Pokemon series has developed several odd traditions over its 24 years of existence. Swapping out the main characters with each new generation of Pokemon is one of them. With each new game and region, a new kid from that region embarks on their journey.
