The Emmy award-winning show Arcane has had a lot of buzz around it since it came out last year, many prising the shows incredible story line, and ability to portray some of the most compelling examples of trauma and emotional disarray in western animation. At the heart of the show are the plethora of interesting and highly complex characters, from the supposed heroes of the show who constantly dip their toes in acts morally ambiguous in nature, to the relatable villains. None perhaps are more memorable than the season one antagonist Silco - but what makes him the perfect villain? Ever since Silco first appeared in episode one, it was clear that Arcane were doing something special. While perhaps not as meaningful as Ekko's introduction , he appears in the usual nefarious way villains are shown, shrouded in darkness, making for a terrifying introduction. He embodies three of the most crucial elements in animation to create a great character: physical animation, overall design, and voice actor performance. Almost everything he says throughout the show demands attention, forcing everything to listen carefully to him, his words carefully chosen and purposeful, always riddled with subtle threats: in many ways they are his primary weapon.

Silco was a Zaunite drug lord and the adoptive father of Jinx. A tyrannical and brutal man, he sought to free the undercity from Piltover 's control and willing to do just about anything to achieve that goal. Silco and Vander were like brothers during their youth, and the two of them once fought together in order to free Zaun from Piltover's repressive rule. However, due to unknown circumstances, Vander eventually betrayed Silco and attempted to drown him in Zaun's polluted rivers. Although Silco managed to survive the incident, the chemicals in the water heavily scarred his face and mutated his left eye. Although he was left traumatized by Vander's betrayal, Silco believed that he had been reborn as a stronger person.

Although Silco hated Vander initially, his hate faded over time—and he grew to appreciate that Vander's silco arcane made him into the dangerous, ruthless man that he is today.
