Marvel's new Silver Surfer: Rebirth series is exploring the past of the character and his relationship with Thanos at a time when the Mad Titan was not hellbent on conquest and destruction, but actually willing to help Surfer protect the universe. In the process, it is also showing how this less villainous version of Thanos was much more powerful than after he entered the era of being truly, irredeemably evil. Thanos is Marvel's most popular villain, but his depiction has varied over the course of the decades. Due to the Mad Titan's complex personality, he has been depicted sometimes as a contemplative scientist, others as a power-hungry madman obsessed with death or rather, Death, his beloved mistress. The most recent appearances of Thanos have been influenced by his portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the ultimate villain, so readers tend to forget that, in the past, Thanos has acted as a hero too, protecting the universe from threats even greater than himself. Marvel's most recent Silver Surfer limited series is set at exactly that time, shortly after Thanos was tasked by Adam Warlock to protect the Reality Gem, the most powerful of the Infinity Stones. Tyrant, a mighty living machine created by Galactus, has stolen the artifact, wreaking havoc throughout the universe, which leads to Silver Surfer and Thanos teaming up to stop the chaos.

If you haven't been following Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw's run on Thanos , the series has been an interesting one. The story finds Thanos summoned to the future by none other than himself. The future Thanos finds himself in is one where he has already proven victorious over the heroes of the galaxy. So if that's the case, why did Thanos summon his past self to the future? Apparently, Thanos may rule the universe but he still has a way to go to woo Mistress Death, who he has obsessively devoted himself to time and time again. He's come a long way, but he still has one challenge left: defeating the Fallen One.
