We have always liked this painting as it shows Van Gogh is not only the depressed atist that cut his ear of, but also an artist with a great sense of humour.
Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette is in many ways the key Antwerp picture. Van Gogh was mocking the procedure in drawing classes, where a skeleton invariably served as the basis of anatomical studies, considered by the teachers to be the artist's indispensable aid in figuring out physical proportions and anatomical structure. The lifelessness of the skeleton represented the very opposite of what van Gogh wanted a picture to express. With the burning cigarette jammed in its teeth, the skeleton, though still nothing but dead bones, has acquired a grotesquely funny hint of life. The painting is less amusing if we bear in mind van Gogh's feeling that he needed to make his outer appearance more attractive. He had just had major dental treatment.

Share Pin. It is part of the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Before it was common to use live humans as models, the academic routine included the study of skeletons to develop an understanding of human anatomy. Van Gogh was in Antwerp, Belgium at that time attending classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, which he later said were boring and taught him nothing. A sketch, Hanging Skeleton and Cat, from the same period would appear to confirm this. His health finally reached its heights when he later after moving back to Paris decided to take himself to an asylum. Van Gogh may also have been influenced by one of his own countrymen, the 17th century Dutch artist, Hercules Segers, who also produced a disturbing work of a skull. We also see various other darker areas on the skeleton suggesting shadow. The right side of the skeleton our left appears to be lit up from an unknown light source whereas its left side our right is darker, where the light is not falling.
