Rigid and coarse, Ralof's hair looks like a piece of dust-caked banana Laffy Taffy I once found under my couch. It's the first thing I saw in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition as we rode in the cart toward our execution, and it didn't leave the best first impression. But soon after I'd spy rich foliage carpeting the floors of dark fir forests and light bouncing off choppy waters on Lake Ilinalta, and these sights would kindle a homesickness for this made-up world I explored for months five years ago, but the inconsistency of the graphics upgrade leaves Skyrim in a strange place. The Nordic homeland looks better here, no doubt, but never quite good enough to let it pass for a modern game, and it lacks any new content or behind-the-scenes features to make it feel fresh for a returning adventurer. Much as the prophets over at Bethesda Game Studios foretold, the Dragonborn has returned to us, but it's certainly not the second coming. Skyrim's Special Edition recaptures and beautifies the original game, but leaves a lot of room for an even-more-special edition down the road.
The original Outcast was kind of a revelation when it first launched as a PC exclusive in An ambitious game set in an original universe with dense lore, tons of quests, a positively rousing orchestral score composed by Lennie Moore and performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and, to top it all, a fully explorable 3D open world two years before Grand Theft Auto III came out. This was truly cutting-edge mind blowing stuff. Attempts at developing a sequel never quite pan out, and the game itself is extremely dated, evidenced by the middling reception of its remake. However, the gaming community has always held a candle for this world. A sentiment clearly not gone unnoticed by Embracer Group who bought the IP rights in , and set its subsidiary THQ Nordic to help reform Appeal Studios with many of its original developers to create a true follow-up to Outcast. Of course, Embracer made similar moves with many legacy franchises and their developers, most of which have now been shut down. The sequel once again puts you in the shoes of Cutter Slade - a name only rivaled by Aiden Pierce in its aggressive 90s-ness - as he returns to the world of Adelpha and helps its denizens thwart an invading robot army.

The game is set years after the events of Oblivion and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel , a continent on the planet Nirn. Its main story focuses on the player's character, the Dragonborn, on their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel to discovered locations in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely. Skyrim was developed using the Creation Engine , which was rebuilt specifically for the game. The team opted for a unique and more diverse open world than Oblivion ' s Imperial Province of Cyrodiil, which game director and executive producer Todd Howard considered less interesting by comparison.
