Updated on October 22, by Ritwik Mitra: There are many indie games that have set a template for other titles to follow. One such indie game that has combined roguelike gameplay and deck-building to make for a tantalizing experience is Slay the Spire, a title that continues to capture the attention of many fans to this day. Controlling a wealth of characters and using powerful card decks to try and reach the top of a spire where every floor is procedurally generated makes for a great time, and fans can't get enough of this amazing title and how simple yet addictive its gameplay loop is. The best part is that players can enhance their enjoyment of this game by utilizing a few mods to really make things more interesting and fresh than ever. Sometimes, the mods that players love the most are the simplest ones that don't change things in a major way and end up being rather unintrusive yet helpful. These kinds of mods are perfect for players who want to preserve the vanilla experience with a few improvements that don't change the core gameplay loop of the title too much. This is why something as simple as the Colored Map mod can make things so much more visually exciting without making too many major changes.

This is going to be terrible for my free time. Slay the Spire, the excellent card-game roguelike fusion has officially enabled Steam Workshop support. What's interesting, is that they now offer two options when launching the game. One to play the vanilla game and one that will enable mods you've subscribed to. I like this option, as it's then quick and easy to go back to the normal game without disabling each mod you decide to try out. There's already some rather interesting mods, like The Slimebound which adds in a sentient Acid Slime as a playable character complete with a full set of cards and new interactions with other creatures.
Oh, great. The very last thing I needed was another reason to play Slay The Spire every day for the rest of my life, forever and ever and ever and ever. Yep, Spire mods - via the doughty Steam Workshop - are very much go. Let's all look forwards to this perfectly-honed machine becoming a big ol'Katamari of madly conflicting ideas. We're but three weeks away from Spire exiting early access and also consuming what little part of my life it hasn't already with its forthcoming Switch port , and that means just a few more weekly patches to put things in place for that glorious day. Patch 54 , Loop, is a biggie, in that it opens up official mod support. Mods have been possible, and have existed for a while now, but the click'n'subscribe ease of the Steam Workshop is going to make them a going concern rather than an experimental journey into mystery for those few of us who can tear their eyes away from the monstrously compulsive base game for long enough. At the time of writing, there are 39 mods available via the Workshop - the most immediately tantalising of which are brand new characters, such as The Disciple , The Blackbeard , The Witch and The Slimebound. Given what a big, honking deal the official third character, The Defect was to this perfect Jenga tower when it arrived, I can't help but regard outside efforts of that magnitude with some suspicion, but I'll be damned if I'm not going 'em a whirl.
