Low, low spin. More forgiving than cc model. LoftUp is a necessity, as is fitting.

We liked the R1 and thought it was one of the better adjustable TaylorMade drivers , but for most of the golfing population the additional fitting elements made it fractionally too heavy to get going. Now with the SLDR driver, the moveable weights in the heel and toe and the dial on the sole have been replaced with a single sliding weight in the cc titanium head. This reduces the weight of the SLDR driver and makes it lighter so that in theory you get more clubhead speed from the same amount of effort. They have also moved the centre of gravity CG closer to the face which also increases ball speed, although this can also increase dispersion and reduce accuracy. TaylorMade are promoting the SLDR driver with the line of 'more distance through more loft' as the head creates much less backspin than other models. This allows you to play a driver with a higher loft, which in turn makes it more forgiving and easier to hit and this is really the key benefit of this driver.

The adjustability is simple and it does work. Most will experience an increase in ball speed and reduced spin, leading to longer drives. Three lofts plus the adjustability gives 6. The glossy grey crown is a bit dull — a big move away from the lairy crown designs of the R1 and RBZ Stage 2. Setting the slider to one extreme limits flight to one shape. Technology TaylorMade responded to feedback on the R1 and attempted to make the adjustability simpler. It really works, too. Even moving the weight a couple of slots either side of neutral had a noticeable effect on the flight. I experienced marginally higher launch, faster ball speeds 2mph more and lower spin numbers than with the R1. So the SLDR lives up to its billing. Average carry was up as a result, from to yards. Shifting the slider three clicks towards fade reduced my tendency to over-draw the ball.

That allows golfers to launch the ball higher and with less spin, which is the key to longer drivers. It also gives the it slightly faster ball speeds more forgiveness on shots hit low on the face. SLDR drivers have a 3-degree range of adjustability 1. But the range of lofts offered by the four different heads 8, 9. Bottom Line: In recent years, TaylorMade has upgraded its premium drivers by adding more. Our testing showed that the SLDR is one of the special drivers that comes around every few years that has the potential to win over an enormous amount of golfers.

I have been using an old high trajectory Burner 3 wood black top off the tee and I get about the same distance as as my driver but a lot more accuracy. By sliding the weight a few more clicks towards fade I was actually able to shape the ball both ways, something I struggle to achieve with conventional drivers. Excited for this club. On a long course needing distance, they may be useful as a fairway wood, just as a 2 wood used to. I hit a driver much longer but never with a twenty yard dispersion after 40 shots.
