Snowblower backfiring. I have a 13 HP Ariens snowblower that started backfiring after about an hour of use. Before I bring it to the shop can any of you suggest what would cause it to backfire and allow me to fix it? Thanks Mueller. Remove Advertisements. Apple Guy.

If it happens when you are desperately trying to clear your yard of snow, it can be even more of a worry! The good news is, if you are wondering why your snow blower backfires, then we have outlined 9 possible reasons here. A backfiring snow blower can be caused by a number of things, including the throttle being shut off too quickly. The first check should be the spark plug, as often replacing them is cheap and easy and will solve the issue. In situations like this, a good first port of call is to check and possibly replace the spark plug. Spark plugs can go bad without you realizing and quite often replacing them is a quick, easy and cheap way of solving the problem. But also the color and condition of a spark plug is a good way of reading the condition of an engine. Check this excellent article to find out in more detail how to read your spark plugs. Black deposits on the spark plug indicate that your engine might be running too rich and if that is the case it is not unusual for it to backfire. A flooded engine is another symptom of an engine running rich, so if the spark plug is wet as well you can be almost certain this is the issue. Try running your snow blower with the choke slightly open. If it runs fine, again this is a sign there is too much fuel in the mix for it combust properly. Or you can try checking for any clogged jets and cleaning them if necessary. It is also worth taking a look at the throttle cable to see if that needs adjusting. On the other side of the coin, white deposits or melted electrodes indicate that your snow blower might be running too lean.
REALLY glad I didn't have to work through the jigsaw puzzle that is disassembling it enough to get the carb off, just tightened the bolts and was fixed.

Snow thrower backfires
Snowblowers can backfire due to carburetor issues, low-quality or stale fuel, incorrect engine timing, a faulty spark plug, a blocked exhaust system, loose or damaged exhaust components, or ignition system problems. A backfiring snowblower can be both startling and concerning. Backfiring occurs when unburned fuel ignites in the exhaust system rather than in the combustion chamber. This can cause a loud noise and, in some cases, damage to your snowblower. Understanding the possible causes and solutions can help you address this issue effectively. Here are some common reasons why your snowblower might be backfiring and how to fix them. An improperly adjusted or dirty carburetor can cause a lean fuel mixture, leading to incomplete combustion and backfiring.

Considering getting it serviced would probably cost several hundred I would need a place that can come pick it up as I don't have a truck I might just buy a propane heater and have it blow directly on me, then I can just work on it in the garage. This can cause an incorrect fuel to air ratio that is too lean on fuel, and just a lot of hot air. I'd try the lazy route first. Did not get a chance to play with it today as I'm still recovering from night shift so by the time I got up and had erands to be at all the places that sell propane were closed. Then suddenly you are cutting down the fuel, but lots of air is still being drawn in. The only adjustment you can make to these is the air gap between the coil and the flywheel. Aug 17, 2, Another reason might be a fuel to air mixture ratio that is too lean, due to problems with the fuel system or air filter. A sudden explosive noise from any small engine will always cause concern. Snowblowers have been around for almost a hundred years now, though they've changed a lot since then. I had the same problem with my Ariens found out that when it got hot the plug wire at the plug would get lose. Sounds like not a manufacturing defect. RE: Snowblower backfiring Try opening the main jet a little.
