When events such as sickness, injury, misadventure or other circumstances beyond your control affect your performance in an assessment or exam, the University may grant you special consideration with regard to an assessment. Such special consideration is usually in the form of allowing extensions for submitting assessment work, additional assessment or allowing you to sit an exam after the exam date. If the policies of the School of Mathematics and Statistics in any way conflict with any University policy, then the University policy applies. The University has policies for special consideration that are followed by the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Note that the University provides a Health Service for medical problems and a Counselling Service which is well experienced in assisting students experiencing depression or personal problems. If you miss a test, examination or other assessment due to illness or misadventure you must submit a special consideration for the test, assignment or examination through MyUNSW. In the case of illness, a doctor's certificate or counsellor's letter covering the date s concerned is required. For misadventure, full documented evidence is required. The application will be assessed by Student Central and an outcome e-mailed to you. The School of Mathematics and Statistics has carefully reviewed its range of assignments and projects to determine their suitability for automatic short extensions as set out by the UNSW Short Extension Policy. Upon comprehensive examination of our course offerings that incorporate these types of assessments, we have concluded that our current deadline structures already accommodate the possibility of unexpected circumstances that may lead students to require additional days for submission. Consequently, the School of Mathematics and Statistics has decided to universally opt out of the Short Extension provision for all its courses, having pre-emptively integrated flexibility into our assessment deadlines. The decision is subject to revision in response to the introduction of new course offerings.
