It was a cool show, and it had a nice "underwater" feel to it, and it actually had good taste in humor. It was great. Like Rocko's Modern Life, another Nicktoon, both shows had an uncanny talent for getting innuendos past Nick censors. Unfortunately, SpongeBob has a slightly milder form of that. When the animation style changed the humor literally completely left and the show went to shit. I kinda think season 10 will surprise us with it's quality hopefully maybe they should try a new showrunner now to liven things up. As the show continues to run and spread across different forms of media such as movies and video games, audience members like myself have begun to notice that there is less care being put into the characters in the show. Part of it, I think, is that the nature of the scripts and the stories you're doing have a tendency to change a little bit, too, just like the Simpsons is a different show than it was 20 years ago. Looking at the characters specifically, there is a term that I believe perfectly describes what has happened to them during the period of decline for Spongebob Squarepants: Flanderization. Simpsons declined over like 6 years slowly, Spongebob was hit and miss for a season after the movie and then went to total crap. It's unconscious on my part.
