Even when I managed to get my starbase Influence cost down to 22, I still was constantly in shortage and struggling to expand for lack of being able to build as many outposts as I would like. Of course building vanguard outposts far from the front line is pretty untenable and expensive, since the Influence cost of just one for being beyond the frontier makes doing that untenable when many more outposts could be built by patiently leveraging proximity rather than leaping for chokepoints. One empire I thought I had on the ropes after occupying all but three of its systems, but then it gained most of them back without building a single new fleet simply because I couldn't amass enough Influence to lay legal claim to everything I had occupied before the game ended the gambit with an unsolicited peace! How do I maximize Influence gain and prioritize its use to avoid those "Influence chokepoints"? Last edited by VulcanTourist ; 23 Nov, am. Showing 1 - 15 of 34 comments.

Influence represents your empire's overall political power in Stellaris. It's used for claiming star systems and maintaining certain projects. An empire's Influence generation per month is usually restricted to the low single digits, so finding ways to get more can help speed up your plans for galactic dominance. Influence needs to be carefully managed so that you can build up the large quantities you'll need to make sweeping claims and maintain diplomatic treaties. It's also heavily used in Espionage, so keep these methods in mind if you plan to have a vast spy network! If you've played Stellaris before and are coming back to it after a break, one important fact to remember is that the uses of Influence have been narrowed in scope over the last few updates. There are also far fewer sources of Influence than there were previously. Specifically, the support of Factions within your empire no longer produces Influence, but rather Unity. By the same token, most Edicts that formerly cost Influence now cost Unity instead. Unity is also used in the place of Influence to sway elections in Democratic and Oligarchic governments.

Big difference! The other key way to gain influence is to declare rivals — you can get up to 2 influence a month for a single rival this way. The key to getting the most out of your rival is based on two main things — proximity and size. If you rival someone close who is as powerful as you are then you are likely to generate a lot of influence. Pick someone equal in size and enjoy the benefits. Stellaris rewards you for playing a benevolent overlord race in a couple of different ways. For each protectorate you have, you gain an additional 1 influence a month — this can add up pretty quickly! The only problem is that it can sometimes be hard to find smaller nations to turn into protectorates. There is also a one-time influence boost every time you Uplift a species , so it can be a good idea to spend down your influence before you bring a new species into the fold.

Hello all, I just started playing this game, and I'm a bit confused by influence. Verx90 said:. I've sent out science ships to explore a large range of stars around my homeworld, and I set up a few outposts, and Claims cost more after you declare war unless your specifically in a defensive war. This mechanic makes you plan very carefully just which systems you need to control. It is not "in", and [high pitch voice] it's not fluent either! If you enter into non-aggression pacts in Stellaris, the game mechanics grant you a small bonus to influence. The only exception to those 2 starting traditions would be Synchronicity, which is kind of a must first pick for hiveminds just to get Instinctive Synchronization, then forget it exists and start filling up prosperity or supremacy as normal and fill out the rest of synchronicity later on. Now, even enclaves and caravaners want influence. Okay, so maybe influence is meant to curb expansion and encourage players to play tall? In fact, they intentionally made it that way.

Influence was balanced when it was put into the new system of mostly upfront costs rather than the old way with frontier outposts but it has become progressively worse over time because needs have gone up and sources have not. However, since you depend on influence for your administration and expansion into other star systems, you should save it wherever possible.
