First posted July 14, My brother called me one day with the news that the roommate of a good friend was selling a car and would I be interested? Somehow word had apparently spread that I seemed to consider buying anything and everything for sale…In actuality I had been complaining about having to deal with snow chains in the mountains on the few occasions that I actually went, and the car for sale was a 4WD Subaru…. It was located in San Jose — about an hour away. When we arrived we were directed to the carport in which it sat. Looking at it from the back it looked OK, just a small dent below the 4WD badge and a cracked taillight. The left side had some minor scuffs but the right side had a fairly mangled front fender.

The Subaru Leone is a compact car produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Subaru from to It was released as a replacement for the Subaru and was the predecessor of the Subaru Impreza. All Leones were powered by the Subaru EA boxer engine. Most cars were equipped with optional four-wheel drive. At the time of its introduction, the Leone was Subaru's top model until , when the larger Legacy was introduced. Although released in Japan and some export markets as the Leone, for many years, this was the only vehicle sold internationally by Subaru where the smaller kei cars Rex , Vivio , R-2 , , and Sambar were not commonly sold. At its introduction, the Leone was Subaru's largest car, and was the top level vehicle above the kei car Subaru Rex. In September , the four-wheel drive 4WD station wagon A67 was released, however it did not appear in the United States until as a model. The Leone was introduced before the Winter Olympics in Sapporo to emphasize its durability in adverse weather conditions. Up until this time four-wheel drive had been limited mainly to off-road vehicles , although the very expensive Jensen FF had been built in limited numbers. Subaru broke this pattern by introducing a mass-produced four-wheel drive passenger car, after having tested the waters by building a limited series of four-wheel drive FF-1 G wagons in Four-wheel drive was Subaru's most notable feature during the s and s, leading to particularly strong sales in places like Switzerland and Colorado. The Leone introduced a Subaru tradition of frameless side windows for all models. In August , Subaru entered into an alliance with Nissan Motors.

Welcome back! I guess if we were continuing with the clever alliterative names for things I would call this Wagon Wednesday. Actually, you know what? Screw it; I am calling it that. One of them is even four-wheel-drive! Neither one of those cars is likely a good deal.
Many of the Subarus that came to the United states after Malcolm Bricklin's hilariously rickety s but before the current era of everything-all-wheel-drive outdoorsy commuters tended to aim for the economy-minded car shoppers looking for a cheap and efficient Japanese car. These cars, the first- and second-generation Leones , were small enough to be the butt of popular-culture jokes , but they sold pretty well in coastal California. Almost made it to , miles. That's about 2, miles per year of this car's life. I have worked on a few of these cars, and words such as "rugged" and "solid" don't come to mind when handling their components. They didn't rust in California, much, but they most certainly didn't hold together quite as well as their Toyota, Datsun, and Nissan competitors of the time. This car had plenty of options, including the automatic transmission. With just 72 horsepower from the GL's 1.

You won't find any Subaru s in U-Wrench yards these days I haven't seen a discarded since the early s , but I still find plenty of Malaise-Era Subarus from the period during which they were mocked for their small size in novelty songs. Here's a seriously loaded by earlys standards Subaru Leone four-wheel-drive wagon, found last fall in a yard just south of Denver. Back in those days, Subaru USA just called this car "the Subaru" and used the trim levels as confusing model names. There was the base model with no name, the mid-grade DL, and the high-end GL. Four-wheel-drive was optional on Subarus at this point, though nearly all Colorado buyers paid for this feature.
