Goombas are a de-evolved form of Dinohattanites appearing in the Super Mario Bros. They are the film's equivalent of the Goombas from Super Mario Bros, super mario film goomba. Depending on a Dinohattanite's ancestry, the Goomba's head type varies, showing either a rounded head, a snake-like head, or a velociraptor-like head. They always wear brown trench coats, the tops of which are shaped vaguely like their game counterparts' heads.
The people who freaked out over the now-delayed Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its weird character designs have obviously never crossed paths with 's Super Mario Bros. Directed by the husband-and-wife team of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo 's moneymaker aimed for the stars but landed firmly in the drain pipe. In an interview with The Guardian , the late Bob Hoskins, who portrayed Mario in the film, was asked, "If you could edit your past, what would you change? Even though the source material is bonkers enough to begin with, the movie took it to the next level with a puzzling storyline and equally bizarre aesthetic. Looking at the plot on paper, however, it's similar to the premise of Super Mario World and the other games in the series. Along the way, they meet and interact with popular characters and creatures from the franchise and adopt the Super Mario Bros. This sounds great and just like those days spent burning up that NES cartridge until the wee hours of the morning, right?

Goombas are Dinohattanites which have been devolved into this form. Goombas have tiny saurian heads on disproportionately large bodies. Their heads are either round, snake-like, or raptor-like, depending on their dinosaur ancestry. While they have enhanced strength and make very loyal soldiers, they are also known to have low intelligence and can be easily distracted. Goombas were once Dinohattanites, a species of strikingly Human-like reptilians from an alternate dimension populated by dinosaurs transported after the asteroid impact 66 million years ago. As the dimension deteriorated due to its resources being exhausted, the King placed General Koopa in charge of energy conservation, although Koopa took the opportunity to research and develop de-evolution technology, eventually launching a coup against the King, de-evolving the King into a giant, sapient fungus and slaughtering most of the King's supporters, including the Portal Guardians, a religious organization dedicated to protecting the remains of the meteor and a portal to Earth generated by its energy. Goombas were presumably made from dissidents, monarchy loyalists, and Portal Guardians, de-evolved just far enough to make them humanoid dinosaurs. As Goombas, they soon made up Koopa's military force, clad in red coats and often wielding fireball guns, receiving training from the police force. As Koopa continued his rule, remodeling the capital city after the Human city of Manhattan and renaming it to Dinohattan, the King, still a fungus, spread across the city to prevent its crumbling infrastructure from being rebuilt, creating more dissent against Koopa's rule. Koopa retaliated by imprisoning any dissident and converting them to Goombas.
Daisy arrives at Mario and Luigi's apartment in Brooklyn and asks them to help her on a new mission. Mario and Luigi, enraged after having witnessed Toad's fate, super mario film goomba, push Koopa into the machine and attempt to de-evolve him before escaping out of the Devo Chamber.
