My interests in the life sciences are very broad and cover many different disciplines -- including genomics, cytogenetics, cell biology, morphology, behaviour, physiology, developmental biology, ecology, and palaeontology -- all linked by the unifying theme of evolution. Although my primary research focus is on genome evolution, I consider myself a biologist first, an evolutionary biologist second, and a genome biologist third. Most of my undergraduate education was based in organismal biology such as behaviour t ryan gregory twitter physiology; my interest in genome evolution developed somewhat later, during the early stages of my graduate program, and has only increased since then, t ryan gregory twitter.

I am an evolutionary biologist specializing in genome size evolution at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Be sure to visit Evolver Zone. Jan 14 comment s. This past May, I was fortunate enough to take part in a conference in Venice, Italy, which was a retrospective on the legacy of famous paleontologist and author Stephen Jay Gould 10 years after his death. Gregory completed his B. He has broad interests in the life science, including genomics, cytogenetics, cell biology, morphology, behaviour, physiology, developmental biology, ecology, and palaeontology -- all linked by the unifying theme of evolution. His main research focuses primarily on the issue of genome size evolution the " C-value enigma " in animals and the origins and biological significance of " junk DNA ". He outlined the Onion Test as a "reality check for anyone who thinks they have come up with a universal function for junk DNA". He created the Animal Genome Size Database in

We've been asked why it doesn't have its own nickname yet. Mackenzie, and T. The media, of course, attribute this to "immunity debt" as flu cases were way down as a result of COVID mitigation measures. The best thing a student can do is avoid this prof and course at all costs. It's a shame bc his presentations are ok content-wise; just he's not good at all as a lecturer. At a larger scale, I have an interest in the frequency and implications of whole-genome duplications i. Most of my undergraduate education was based in organismal biology such as behaviour and physiology; my interest in genome evolution developed somewhat later, during the early stages of my graduate program, and has only increased since then. My lab is also concerned with developing optimized protocols for image analysis and flow cytometry to allow the measurement of genome sizes from various types of tissues and from preserved material. If possible take it through another prof. To do well you need to understand and apply the concepts taught, not just brute memorization.

Andrews, J. Nevertheless, I maintain a keen interest in the biology of organisms, and have sought to integrate genomics and organismal biology as much as possible in my research. Smith, E. The smallest avian genomes are found in hummingbirds. Macroevolution and Multi-Level Selection Theory In order to understand the massive variation in eukaryotic genome sizes, it is necessary to acknowledge the genome itself as a level of biological organization forged by evolutionary processes acting at lower levels i. Get ready to read Lots of homework. Understanding natural selection: essential concepts and common misconceptions. Insect Molecular Biology, in press. Fitness depends on the current environment, not the future. Case studies relatively straight forward. More virus per case in general, 3. In keeping with this, I am currently working to build a Division of Genomic Diversity within the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, which will create further links between the study of genomes and of the organisms in which they reside.
