Before Haruhi attends Ouran Academy, she is described as a pretty girl as seen in flashbacks when she had long hair and wore a girl's uniform. However, upon enrolling at the prestigious school, her image changes drastically. When Haruhi is first introduced in the anime, she sports a nerdy, androgynous look that differs greatly from her middle-school appearance. Having gotten gum in her hair just before the school year begins, she cuts it short.
In the manga, she does ultimately end up with one of the members of the Host Club, which is quite satisfying after seeing her build relationships with each and every member. It may come as no surprise to readers, but Haruhi ends up with Tamaki Suoh after being continuously alienated by his intense romantic actions , which eventually turn into respect and then affection. However, was Tamaki really the best match for Haruhi after all? There's another character who's shown to be highly compatible with Haruhi, and may actually be better suited to her personality without forcing it. Hitachiin Hikaru, one of the Hitachiin twins, is a fair competitor for Haruhi's heart, especially against Tamaki. Hikaru had spent his entire life as a single entity with his twin Kaoru, so when Haruhi becomes the first person to tell them apart, Hikaru's world is rocked. She is the first and seemingly only person to tell the two twins apart and easily recognize their personality differences. This causes Hikaru to find a connection with someone outside of his brother for the first time, and he eventually falls head over heels for Haruhi. She makes him feel like an individual and not just the twin brother of Kaoru. As for Haruhi, she simply wants to be seen for who she is, not what she looks or dresses like.

Fans of Ouran High School Host Club that are familiar with how the manga continues the series' story will already be aware that, in the end, it's Tamaki that ends up marrying Haruhi despite the small moments that other hosts, such as the twins, received throughout the show. Much of the manga that fans didn't get to see animated covers both Tamaki and Haruhi slowly realizing that they're falling for each other — but because other hosts did get scenes with Haruhi, there's been a lot of speculation into whether the King really was the right choice.
