Testing my stator using a ohm meter my readings are. Between blue and red leads Also does the stator have to be installed on engine for this test and is this a good test procedure? If your readings are not within the range specified for your stator the part is bad. Replace it. I left out a little info on my 1st post, the numbers are from a new Mercury stator that I just got today to replace my old stator. My old stator numbers are I'm all screwed up the way I'm seeing this. Do I have 2 bad stators or are they both ok? New stator part no. Paul, Look at this link. If I get multiple questionable readings, testing mercury stator, I go dig a resistor out of the parts drawers that is near what I'm trying to measure, just to check the meter. If your engine mounted tank is not filling then the tank is leaking air or the oil line is clogged, or the check valve is stuck.

I have a Mercury 4 hp single cylinder that has no spark. I filed the points, soldered on new wires as the insulation was cracked. I had spark initially and then nothing. I did some checking and followed a how to video and have determined the coil is dead by checking with an ohm meter. The coil is expensive enough. But the cost of the stator far exceeds the value of this motor. Thank you for the article.

I will continue my search but would greatly appreciate someone chiming in about my stator findings and what they mean. Their info is probably very current, regardless of what OEM says. Some failures only show up clearly after the motor has reached operating temperature. I have the same exact symptoms: runs great when i first get to the lake, take a couple of laps around the lake and it runs perfect, set it down off plane, begin idling and sooner or later it feels like it's running on half the cylinders.
