The Hunter is a Australian drama filmdirected by Daniel Nettheim and produced by Vincent Sheehan, based on the novel of the same name by Julia Leigh. In the film, a shadowy corporation "Red Leaf" the huntere mercenary Martin David Dafoe to Tasmania to track down a thylacinethe huntere, a supposedly extinct animal whose genetic code holds the secret to a dangerous weapon. The film opened to the Australian public in cinemas on 29 September Mercenary Martin David is hired by military the huntere company, Red Leaf, to go to Tasmania and gather samples of a supposedly extinct marsupial, the thylacine Tasmanian tigerwith further instructions to kill all remaining tigers to ensure no competing organisation will get their DNA.

This was the last theatrical film made by director Buzz Kulik. Ralph "Papa" Thorson arrives in a small town in Illinois where, despite being a terrible driver a running joke throughout the film , he captures fugitive Tommy Price for fleeing his bail. Thorson drives to Houston to bring in a dangerous hooligan named Billie Joe, whose kinfolk include Sheriff Strong, a corrupt redneck lawman who warns Thorson not to get involved. Papa ignores him and ends up in a destructive fight with the enormous fugitive, but succeeds in apprehending him. Thorson drives both Tommy Price and Billie Joe back to Los Angeles, where he collects his reward for bringing them back. However, Thorson vouches for Price, who soon begins fixing things at Thorson's house and becomes one of Thorson's many acquaintances who hang out there.
