For the first half of the episode, however, Joel and Ellie seem to have the whole world to themselves. When we last saw the two making a stop, it was part of a plan, a visit to a convenience store that Joel used to stash weaponry and other supplies. This, however, is different. An emotionally racking minute epic about the once-in-a-lifetime romance between two middle-aged survivors of the fungapocalypse. We follow Bill Nick Offerman and Frank Murray Bartlett from their meet-cute in a trapping pit to an agonizing euthanasia-suicide pact 16 years later. Offerman superbly matched Bartlett: both sexy, vulnerable, spontaneous. In the end, love triumphed over death and mushrooms. Audience reaction was quite a lot, too. Tattoos parlors were overrun with orders of Bill and Frank toasting strawberries. The A. The emotional stakes are raised by this openness, which presents itself over the course of this shorter 45 minute chapter, thanks to a starkly violent, inciting event. Thankfully his flashes of darkness are offset by a more jovial turn from Ellie; even if her pun-packed joke book can't crack him, they still grant us moments of welcome humour.
