Previously, he wrote about technology and gaming for Naavik, Protocol, and The Verge. In a marketing campaign idea that even the least savvy internet user could have told you was a terrible idea, the North Face decided to announce publicly earlier this week how it gamed Google Search results to promote its products by the north face wikipedia photos of them to high-traffic Wikipedia entries.
In April, the ad agency Leo Burnett Tailor Made, filled Wikipedia entries of Brazilian landmarks with professional shots featuring the brand, with the intention of causing Google to display the same images in the top few search results. The photos uploaded by the agency prominently featured models wearing North Face gear in the foreground of the shot. The substitution was only noticed when the agency proudly revealed what it had done in a lavishly produced video shared by industry publication AdAge. Adding content that is solely for commercial promotion goes directly against the policies, purpose and mission of Wikipedia to provide neutral, fact-based knowledge to the world. But some good has come of the campaign. In order to upload images to Wikipedia, users must allow their work to be edited and reused so that the free nature of the encyclopedia can be preserved. That means that savvy editors have been hard at work cropping The North Face logo out of otherwise perfectly usable landscape shots, leaving them available to use on the free encyclopaedia forever — without offering free advertising to a clothing company.

By Dami Lee. The North Face, in a campaign with advertising agency Leo Burnett Tailor Made, hatched a scheme to get its products to the top of Google Images by replacing Wikipedia photos with its own product placement shots. In the promotional video, the company notes how all trips begin with an initial Google search, and often the first image that shows up is from a Wikipedia article about the destination. The company took advantage of this fact by trekking to popular tourist destinations like Guarita State Park in Brazil and Huayna Picchu in Peru to take photos prominently featuring its products. It then swapped out the original Wikipedia photos for its own or, in some cases, outright Photoshopped a North Face product into an existing photo. Ad Age suggests that, based on the original statement from Leo Burnett Tailor Made, the company may have anticipated the negative public reaction to its exploitative campaign.
