Production began in when Screen Gems purchased the rights to Amorth's story. After a directorial replacement and script revisions, filming occurred in Ireland from August to October The Pope's Exorcist was released in several countries beginning on April 5, , and in the United States on April In , Father Gabriele Amorth, the Pope 's personal exorcist , an earthy, scooter-riding, humorous, practical man, visits an Italian village where a man is seemingly possessed by a demon. With the local priest, Amorth enters the room where the man is tied up. While exorcising him, using a Saint Benedict Medal sacramental, Amorth taunts the demon, challenging it to possess a pig; when it does, the pig is killed with a shotgun. This incident gets Amorth in trouble with a Church tribunal, since he acted without permission from superiors.

Sometimes, history reveals things that can't be explained. Dark vacancies that leave cavernous holes in what we know to be true. It is the subject of our most exciting adventures through alternate and unsolved mysteries. It's also a breeding ground for horror and ancient evil that tests our resolve and subjects us to demonic presences that only a select few, those shrouded in both history and faith, can confront. Is that how you found your way to this project, or were you familiar with him beforehand? I didn't really know anything about Father Amorth. When the script was sent to me, and it said The Pope's Exorcist, I actually thought it was just some sort of made-up thing. Hollywood likes to make up these things [laughs]. Then when I dug a little deeper, I realized this guy was real, and he was the chief exorcist at the Vatican for, I think, thirty-six years. The more I dug into his character, the more fascinating I found him. He was an iconoclast, a rogue within the church. It was documented that he thumbed his nose at the new church, and he was very outspoken. But what I found interesting, even though he was confronting these new ways in the church, he was always this super faithful servant of God, and his faith was unquestionable. I love that contradiction. In the script, when I read it, Father Amorth sort of reminded me of a Dirty Harry or Columbo, very much of a rogue within the institution.

Gabriele Amorth. Amorth served as the exorcist for the Diocese of Rome from until his death in at the age of Catholic exorcism was once extremely rare in the United States and much of Europe, and Amorth played a major role in normalizing the practice. In , he founded the International Association of Exorcists, or the IAE, a Catholic group that advocates for the practice of exorcism and trains new exorcists. This group has been critical of the way Amorth and his ministry are portrayed in the film. However, the Rev. Amorth was a polarizing figure who had a complicated relationship with horror movies. Having researched the history of exorcism , I find it appropriate that a horror film about his life is drawing controversy. Amorth sometimes boasted of having performed as many as , exorcisms.
