Co-written and directed by Zack Snyderwith Miller serving as executive producer and consultant, the film is, like its source material, a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars. The story is framed by a voice-over narrative by the Spartan soldier Dilios David Wenham. Through this narrative techniquevarious fantastical creatures are introduced, placing within the genre of historical fantasy. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, three hundred rise of an empire, who praised its visuals and style but criticized its historical inaccuracies, including its depiction of the Persianswhich some characterized as bigoted or Iranophobic.

In the end the movie doesn't hold together as well as the first one, but good hell it's some fun while you're up in it. A great villain and some fun action scenes almost make up for the plodding plot but the brutishness of the storytelling makes the original feel positively light hearted by comparison. Darius's son, Xerxes , witnesses his father's death and is advised to never wage war against the Greeks. Darius's naval commander, Artemisia , persuades Xerxes to become a god and sends Xerxes on a journey through the desert. Xerxes reaches a cave and bathes in an otherworldly liquid, emerging as a "God-King". He returns to Persia and declares war on Greece to avenge his father. As Xerxes's forces advance towards Thermopylae , Themistocles meets with the council and convinces them to provide him with a fleet to engage the Persians at sea.
