Indigenous people explored the diverse terrains represented at Tompson Street Reservation. Sunset Mountain, with its exposed bedrock and at an elevation of feet, may have had spiritual significance for the Algonquians who lived here prior to English settlement. A trail off Old Thompson Street Cart Path leads to a prominent jumble of Avalonian boulders that Indigenous people and others used as a rock shelter.

Upcountry Favorite: Thompson Road The one thing about living on an island like Maui: there are only so many places to go. Every road and every path eventually leads to a beach, a rain forest, or on top of a mountain like Haleakala. One of my favorite places on the island to take a leisurely weekend stroll is on Thompson Road. Grandmas is famous for their savory pastries and overall lovely upcountry Maui ambience. Bordered by endless cattle pastures and historic lava rock walls, Thompson Road offers epic views that stretch from the Makena Shoreline all the way to the summit of the Haleakala crater. Word to the wise: this is an actual road so watch out for the occasional car or truck that drive by, however, we usually see more people on Thompson than vehicles. It is one of our favorite places to go for a walk. Many say Thompson Road is like going back to old Hawaii. This is one of the reasons why are walks are always Peaceful and Serene. It feels like you are walking under the clouds. We are always amazed on how the sky is so blue.

Atop the largest of the exposed ledge, Eagle Rock, you are treated to a stunning panoramic view of Cape Ann. Bray Street Gateway : Latitude Trailhead and parking are immediately on the right. Establishment of this church in meant that West Gloucester residents did not have to make the hours-long journey through the woods and across the bay to the First Parish Church in downtown Gloucester. Trailhead and parking are directly across from the off-ramp. The woods contain young trees and shrub growth as a result of years of sporadic fire activity. Start up the wide trail with orange trail markers and notice the beautiful stonework of the once working farm here.
