Almost all bosses in the game have several different types of difficulty. The higher the difficulty you set the boss battle for, the more difficult it will be to defeat them. In the boss battle screen at the beginning of the fight, it will be set at the default normal mode, as well as when you are starting the main quest. More EXP will be received when defeating the boss when setting the desired difficulty level you want it at, after you have defeated it from main quest the first time.
