Martin Shaw dons a judge's wig in this feature-length first episode of the powerful courtroom drama. Our hero strives to juggle moral dilemmas and a busy love life. A police informer is charged with a serious assault on his wife, but Deed is pressured to acquit him because he could have vital information about the real IRA for MI5. Meanwhile, in a date rape case tried by Deed, an arrogant young barrister keen to make his mark leads the defence. When a young man is killed on a building site, the rich, well-connected boss attempts to blame his underlings. John Deed takes up the cause, much to the dismay of the Lord Chancellor's department. Meanwhile, Deed's daughter, an animal rights activist, liberates a dog from a lab, leading to blackmail attempts. A rapist convicted by Deed is released from prison and is intent on revenge. After initially harassing Deed, he then turns his attention to the judge's daughter. Deed fights a never ending battle with corruption within the legal system, while his amorous adventures keep him busy. Deed acquits a young female doctor accused of killing an elderly patient whose will is written in her favour.
Judge John Deed takes the case of Maurice Haart, a father accused of murdering the man who killed his daughter. Rochester sees to it that Deed is brought up for jury service, and he is called to a murder trial in which a Ukrainian nanny is suspected of shaking a baby in her care to death.
