It has been regarded as the most competitive trail ultramarathon in the world. The announcement by UTMB and Vail was met with outrage by the North American trail community, it has been seen as a corporate takeover of the existing race that was built up by the local organiser Gary Robbins, with fears it is attempting to create a monopoly by taking over current community based races and turning them into a profit centred event which is not inline with the values of the community. The race takes place once a year on either the last weekend in August or the first weekend of September in the Alps. It has a distance of approximately kilometres mi , and a total elevation gain of around 10, metres 32, ft. It is widely regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world, and one of the largest with more than 2, starters. The races have strict entry and qualification requirements attained by accumulating enough race points through qualifying trail races over the previous two-year period. While the best runners complete the loop in slightly more than 20 hours, most runners take 32 to 46 hours to reach the finish line. Most runners will have to run through two nights to complete the race. Since , a second race Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix half-loop has also been organised, and a third race was added in "Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie". The UTMB was filled with question marks about who would end up standing on the top step of the podium, both for the men and women. If one were to ignore everything that Courtney Dauwalter pre-race and post-race interviews had previously done this summer, she would have been the odds-on favorite. But just seven weeks removed from setting a new course record at the Hardrock , which was just three weeks after doing the same at the Western States , no one knew how her seemingly super-human body and mind would hold up. But really, in hindsight, it was silly for anyone to worry about how the G. Dauwalter once again showed that she is in a league of her own, leading the race from 32 kilometers in and never looking back. Her runaway victory resulted in a time of For the men, with nine out of the top 10 men from returning, the depth of the field was unquestionable.
Spaniard Jornet, who last won the race back in , had been a doubt to even take part after announcing in the build-up that he had tested positive for Covid , despite being asymptomatic. Thankfully he was able to make the startline and what followed was an exhibition performance — though for a while it looked as if Jim Walmsley was poised to post a first American win. Walmsley had dominated until Champex-Lac before sending out distress signs, at which point he was overhauled by Jornet and Mathieu Blanchard FRA who would both go on to break the hour mark. The early pace was set by winner Pau Capell ESP — the previous course record holder with his — who moved in front in the first few kilometres before he and Jornet started to trade the lead. He was first to Saint-Gervais after 22km, though in truth there was virtually nothing between the top It was nip and tuck for a good while after that, Jornet nudging just ahead by La Balme after 40km but as night fell it had turned into what seemed a duel between two greats of the sport as Jornet and Walmsley ran together, now over 10 minutes clear of the rest. In the early hours of Saturday morning they were still alongside each other when leaving Courmayeur, but then Walmsley suddenly opened up a five-minute advantage. He dominated all the way to Champex-Lac but that was where the whole complexion of the race changed as he slowed right up as Jornet and the charging Blanchard powered past. UTMB pic.

Dauwalter led from early on, and with her in such good form, it was clear that, barring accident or injury, all bets were off over the ultimate winner. But in every other way, this was the running event of the year- if not the decade. As the crowds started to build later in the race as the runners emerged from the night, the atmosphere was electric with everyone crowding together to witness Dauwalter close in on history. Moving towards Trient km the frenzy reached new levels.

And while it initially seemed that the race would play out as expected, with Walmsley and Jornet trading blows for the first kilometers, it would be Mathieu Blanchard post-race interview who made the final attempt to dethrone Jornet.
