Meanwhile, Thors and his army of enthusiastic young men embark on their voyage. Hoping to save all the villagers, he offers Askeladd a deal.

The following contains spoilers for Vinland Saga Season 2, episode 4, "Awakening," now streaming on Netflix. The third episode of the new season of Vinland Saga was solid. The episode focused on Thorfinn's current state of mind, which is clearly different from when he was with Askeladd's group. Thorfinn has changed a lot, but what brought about this transformation was kept under wraps. With every passing episode, fans have been learning more and more about the new Thorfinn. As Fox was readying to kill Thorfinn, Snake stepped in and punched his subordinate. After saving Thorfinn from Fox, Snake inquired about the situation. He learned from Badger about what had happened, and he apologized to both slaves.

After his father's death and the destruction of his village at the hands of English raiders, Einar wishes for a peaceful life with his family on their newly rebuilt farms. However, fate has other plans: his village is invaded once again. Einar watches helplessly as the marauding Danes burn his lands and slaughter his family. The invaders capture Einar and take him back to Denmark as a slave. Einar clings to his mother's final words to survive. He is purchased by Ketil, a kind slave owner and landlord who promises that Einar can regain his freedom in return for working in the fields. Despite Thorfinn's insistence on how little he values his own life, the swiftness with which his leg rises to block Snake's blow says otherwise, something that Snake could clearly see in Thorfinn when Thorfinn was silently enduring all of Fox's torment and insults. However, it isn't like one bold gesture from a complete stranger is going to suddenly turn Thorfinn's life around. This is Vinland Saga after all, and things are never so simple. You see, after getting patched up and returning to work, Thorfinn admitted to Einar his past as a Danish warrior, as a raider of villages and a killer of soldiers and civilians alike. When Einar asked how many people Thorfinn had killed—Five? So, now, in the dead of night, with a hideous grimace of rage and anguish contorting his features, Einar tries to do what the world has told him he ought to do. According to men like Snake, or Fox, or even Olmar, the only way forward in life is to assert your power. The strong are meant to kill the weak.

I don't blame Einar for almost strangling Thorfinn to death as he slept, I'm sure that after the convo they had in the forest, he saw Thorfinn as no different from the men who killed his family.
