Watto was a male Toydarian junk dealer and human trafficker who owned a junkshop in Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine.

In his youth, he served as a soldier in the Ossiki Confederacy Army on his homeworld of Toydaria , but later left after sustaining permanently damaging injuries. Making his way to Tatooine, he fell in with the Jawa natives of the planet, and learned how to trade from them. Once he felt he had learned all he could, he abandoned the Jawas, and set up Watto's Shop in Mos Espa. He became one of Tatooine's many slave owners, and made a lucrative business for himself. Eventually, he came into possession of a young slave, Anakin Skywalker , who proved to be a gifted mechanic, and an invaluable asset to the running of the store. Soon enough, Watto discovered that the boy had an affinity for podracing. Watto would often bet on the podraces, and was an avid fan, so he had Anakin race for him in several tournaments. Although the boy never won, he was clearly gifted.
At this point, thanks to his reputation as a junk dealer, Watto was called on to help retrieve various parts for the Empire and their cargo. Read Edit View history.
He is computer-generated and is voiced by voice actor Andy Secombe. He is a mean-tempered, greedy Toydarian , and owner of a second-hand goods store in Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine. Among Watto's belongings are the slaves Shmi Skywalker and her son; Anakin. He acquires them after winning a podracing bet with Gardulla the Hutt, and he puts them both to work in his store. Anakin demonstrates an incredible aptitude for equipment repair, and Watto decides to profit from it by having the boy fix various broken equipment in the store. He eventually loses Anakin in a podracing bet with Qui-Gon Jinn when he bets on a competitor, Sebulba , who is defeated by Anakin.
The "Star Wars" universe has countless interesting and well-developed characters, ranging from those we've seen throughout the movies — like Obi-Wan Kenobi — to those introduced and explored through animation — like Ahsoka Tano. Then, there's Watto, the Mos Espa-based junk dealer who once owned Anakin Skywalker and his mother, Shmi, and is confidently one of the worst "Star Wars" characters. Whatever happened to the grumpy Toydarian? Interestingly enough, Watto's fate created a bit of a plot hole in the old "Star Wars" canon. However, when he travels to Mos Espa, he beheads an elderly Toydarian junk dealer, presumably Watto, after acquiring information on Kenobi. It's unclear exactly what year "Old Wounds" takes place, but it's definitely before the Battle of Yavin, where Luke Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star.
